Quality Control

Every Batch Checked Before Shipment

Consistent construction chemical performance is essential to stable formulations, efficient production and reliable finished products.

MICHEM combines production management, physical laboratory testing and application-based evaluation to control product quality. Every batch undergoes physical and application testing before shipment, helping us verify both measurable product characteristics and practical performance.

Our objective is clear: provide customers with products they can evaluate confidently and use more consistently in regular production.

Performance First

Specifications Matter. Application Performance Matters More.

A technical data sheet provides important information about a product, but specifications alone cannot fully predict how that product will behave in a customer’s formulation.

Two materials may show similar physical data while producing different results in tile adhesive, wall putty, plaster, self-leveling compounds or concrete. Differences may appear in dissolution, water retention, workability, open time, sag resistance, flow, air content, adhesion or surface quality.

That is why MICHEM does not evaluate quality only through isolated physical parameters.

Our quality control process connects physical testing with application testing. This provides a more complete basis for determining whether a product is suitable for release and whether it performs as expected in its intended application.

Process Control

Quality Control Throughout the Production Process

Quality control begins before the finished product reaches the laboratory. It is built into the way product requirements, production and final evaluation are connected.

  1. 01

    Product Requirements Are Defined

Before an order enters production, the product grade, intended application, relevant technical requirements and packaging specifications are confirmed.

For regular products, production follows the defined requirements of the established grade. For customized projects, the agreed technical objectives are reviewed before production arrangements are finalized.

Clear requirements provide the foundation for meaningful quality evaluation.

  2. 02

Production Is Managed Against Confirmed Requirements

During production, relevant process and product requirements are managed according to the confirmed grade.

Production and quality personnel work with the same product objectives, helping connect manufacturing conditions with the characteristics expected from the finished batch.

  3. 03

    Finished Products Undergo Physical Testing

After production, samples are evaluated in MICHEM’s physical laboratory.

The testing focus depends on the product category and grade. Relevant characteristics may include appearance, moisture, viscosity, pH, solids content, bulk density or other defined technical properties.

These results help determine whether the batch aligns with its product specification.

  4. 04

    Application Performance Is Evaluated

The batch is also evaluated through application testing appropriate to the product and its intended use.

This stage helps reveal how the material behaves within a representative formulation rather than as an isolated powder or liquid.

  5. 05

    Products Are Evaluated Before Shipment

Physical and application test results are reviewed before the batch proceeds to shipment.

Connecting these two levels of evaluation helps MICHEM make quality decisions based on both product data and practical performance.

Physical Laboratory

Physical Laboratory Testing

The physical laboratory provides measurable information about the characteristics and consistency of each product.

Testing requirements vary because cellulose ethers, polymer powders, concrete admixtures, fibers and functional additives perform different roles.

Cellulose Ethers

For HPMC, HEMC, HEC and CMC products, relevant physical testing may include properties such as:

  • Appearance
  • Moisture content
  • Viscosity
  • pH
  • Fineness
  • Grade-specific characteristics

These parameters provide an important reference for grade identification and batch consistency. However, a cellulose ether that meets its viscosity range must still be evaluated for its behavior in the intended formulation.

Redispersible Polymer Powders

For redispersible polymer powders, physical evaluation may focus on characteristics such as:

  • Appearance
  • Solids / moisture content
  • Ash content
  • Bulk density
  • Film-forming characteristics
  • Grade-specific requirements

Different multipurpose, flexible, hydrophobic and thixotropic grades require different evaluation priorities.

Concrete Admixtures

For polycarboxylate, melamine-based and naphthalene-based admixtures, relevant physical properties may include:

  • Appearance
  • Moisture / solids content
  • pH
  • Active content
  • Bulk characteristics
  • Defined product requirements

These results provide a technical reference, while application testing evaluates the admixture’s behavior in a cement-based system.

Fibers and Functional Additives

Fibers, defoamers, hydrophobic agents, gypsum retarders, starch ethers and other additives are evaluated according to the characteristics relevant to their product type and intended function.

The testing focus is therefore determined by what the material is expected to contribute to the complete formulation.

Application Laboratory

Application Laboratory Testing

Application testing helps answer the question that matters most to customers:

“How will this product perform when it is actually used?”

MICHEM’s application laboratory evaluates products in representative dry-mix mortar, concrete or coating systems. The evaluation focus depends on the product category and intended application.

01

Water Retention and Thickening

For cellulose ethers and related additives, testing may examine how the product influences water retention, consistency and thickening behavior.

These properties can affect hydration, application smoothness, workability and final surface quality.

02

Workability and Open Time

Application tests can help evaluate mixing behavior, spreading, trowelability and usable working time.

This is especially relevant for tile adhesives, wall putty, renders, plasters and other manually applied materials.

03

Sag and Slip Resistance

For products used on vertical surfaces, the formulation must remain stable after application.

Testing can help evaluate whether the selected additive system provides the required balance between workability and resistance to sagging or tile slip.

04

Adhesion, Cohesion and Flexibility

Redispersible polymer powders influence the polymer-modified performance of mortar formulations.

Application evaluation can help compare grades developed for multipurpose use, higher flexibility, hydrophobicity or thixotropic behavior.

05

Flow and Water Reduction

For concrete admixtures and self-leveling applications, testing may focus on dispersion, flow, water demand and workability behavior.

Because cement type and other raw materials can influence the result, application evaluation is an essential part of product selection.

06

Air, Setting and Water Resistance

Functional additives may be evaluated according to their intended influence on air control, setting behavior, early strength, water absorption or hydrophobic performance.

The objective is to determine whether the additive delivers its intended function without creating unnecessary negative effects elsewhere in the formulation.

Combined Evaluation

Why We Combine Physical and Application Testing

Physical testing and application testing answer different questions.

Physical Testing

Helps confirm what the product is.

VS

Application Testing

Helps evaluate what the product does.

A cellulose ether may meet its viscosity requirement but still need to be assessed for dissolution, water retention and workability. A polymer powder may align with relevant physical parameters but produce different results in adhesion, flexibility or application feel. A concrete admixture may meet its specification while behaving differently with different cement sources.

By combining both forms of evaluation, MICHEM creates a more practical quality-control system for construction chemicals.

This approach helps customers reduce uncertainty when moving from:

Consistency

Supporting Consistency Across Repeat Orders

For manufacturers, product consistency affects much more than laboratory results.

Unexpected variation may require dosage adjustment, formulation changes, additional testing or production intervention. It can also affect how the finished product performs for distributors, contractors and end users.

MICHEM’s batch-level testing is designed to support more stable product evaluation and regular purchasing.

Our quality team uses defined product requirements, physical data and application observations to assess each batch before shipment. When customers have specific quality priorities, these can be reviewed during the product selection and order-confirmation process.

Customer Requirements

Customer-Specific Quality Requirements

Different customers may use different raw materials, test methods, production equipment or product standards.

When evaluating a MICHEM product, customers can share relevant information such as:
